Summer is one of the best times to get outside and make memories with your dog—but the heat can also bring challenges. The key is finding activities that are not only fun, but safe and enriching for your pup.
Here are some of my favorite ways to keep your dog active, engaged, and cool all summer long:
🥾 Get Outside for an Adventure (Smartly!)
Hiking is an amazing way to burn energy and strengthen your bond with your dog. New environments provide mental stimulation, which is just as important as physical exercise.
Tips for summer hikes:
Go early in the morning or later in the evening.
Bring plenty of water for both of you. Check out this water bottle that you can use for your dog.
Check the ground temperature (hot pavement = burned paws).
Take breaks in shaded areas.
Even a short nature walk can make a big impact on your dog’s happiness.
💦 Splash Time = The Best Time
Most dogs LOVE water, and it’s one of the safest ways for them to cool down.
Fun ideas:
Use a sprinkler or hose for playtime.
Visit a dog-friendly lake or creek.
If your dog is new to water, take it slow and make it positive never force them in.
🧊 Frozen Treats & Enrichment Toys
When it’s too hot to be super active, enrichment is your best friend.
Try this:
Fill a toy (like a Kong) with yogurt, peanut butter, or wet food.
Not only does this keep your dog busy, but it also helps regulate their energy and reduces boredom (aka less destructive behavior).
🎾 Keep Play Sessions Short & Sweet
Dogs still need exercise in the summer, but overdoing it in the heat can be dangerous.
Better options:
Short games of fetch.
Tug-of-war in the shade.
Training sessions (mental exercise tires them out!)
Watch for signs of overheating like excessive panting, drooling, or slowing down.
🧠 Train & Engage Indoors
Hot day? Perfect time to work your dog’s brain.
You can:
Practice basic obedience cues.
Teach a new trick.
Use puzzle toys or scent games.
Mental stimulation is just as exhausting as a long walk and much safer in extreme heat.
❤️ Don’t Forget: Safety First
Summer fun should always be safe fun.
Keep in mind:
Never leave your dog in a parked car.
Always provide fresh water.
Know your dog’s limits (age, breed, health all matter).
🐶 Final Thoughts
Summer doesn’t have to slow you and your dog down it just means getting a little more intentional. With the right mix of activity, enrichment, and cooling strategies, your dog can stay happy, healthy, and fulfilled all season long.
And honestly? Some of the best memories are the simplest ones splashing in water, exploring a trail, or just hanging out together.
